How to use this calculator

  1. Enter buy price per coin
  2. Enter sell price per coin
  3. Enter quantity — Fractional amounts are fine — 0.05 BTC, 2.5 ETH.
  4. Enter fee when buying (optional — leave it as it is if it does not apply)
  5. Enter fee when selling (optional — leave it as it is if it does not apply)
  6. Enter tax rate on gains — India has taxed virtual digital asset gains at a flat rate — check the current rules. (optional — leave it as it is if it does not apply)
  7. Read the result — it updates as you type.

The formula used

Net profit = (Sell × Qty − Sell fee) − (Buy × Qty + Buy fee)

Qty
Number of coins, fractions allowed
Fees
A percentage of each side's value

Return on cost divides the net profit by everything you had to spend, including the buying fee. Break-even = (cost + all fees) ÷ quantity.

Worked example

0.5 coins bought at ₹30,00,000 and sold at ₹42,00,000, with 0.5% fees each way.

  • Invested0.5 × ₹30,00,000 = ₹15,00,000
  • Sale value0.5 × ₹42,00,000 = ₹21,00,000
  1. Buying fee = ₹7,500, selling fee = ₹10,500
  2. Net profit = ₹21,00,000 − ₹15,00,000 − ₹18,000 = ₹5,82,000
  3. Tax at 30% = ₹1,74,600 → after tax ₹4,07,400

A 40% price rise became a 38.6% return after fees, and about 27% after tax.

Counting the costs in crypto

Exchange fees look small as a percentage and add up quickly, especially if you trade often. Both sides of every trade are charged, and spreads on thin pairs cost more still.

Tax in India is unusually strict

Gains on virtual digital assets have been taxed at a flat rate, with a separate TDS on transactions, and — importantly — losses generally cannot be set off against other income or even against other crypto gains. Check the current rules; they have changed since crypto tax was introduced.

Volatility is the real risk

Crypto routinely moves 10% in a day and has had drawdowns of 70–80% lasting years. Any projection here assumes you know the sell price, which in practice nobody does.

No live prices

This site does not connect to any exchange or price feed. Both prices are yours to enter, so check them on your exchange before relying on the result.

Tips and common mistakes

Getting more out of it

  • Take the fee percentages from your exchange's schedule — they vary widely and apply to both the buy and the sell.
  • Include withdrawal and network fees in "other" costs if they were significant.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Calculating profit from the price difference alone and ignoring fees on both legs.
  • Assuming crypto losses can offset other income. In India the rules on setting off losses are unusually restrictive.
  • Expecting the site to know the coin price. Both prices are ones you enter.

Frequently asked questions

Do you fetch live crypto prices?

No. You enter both the buy and sell price yourself. Nothing on this site connects to a market data source.

How is crypto taxed in India?

Gains on virtual digital assets have been subject to a flat tax rate plus TDS on transfers, with restrictions on setting off losses. Rates and rules can change — verify the current position or ask a tax professional.

Can I use this for a loss?

Yes. Enter a sell price below your buy price and the result shows the net loss. No tax is applied to a loss here.

What fee should I enter?

Check your exchange's fee schedule. Many charge between 0.1% and 1% per side, with lower rates at higher volumes. Remember to include withdrawal fees if they are significant.
