The gap between the gold price and your return
Gold jewellery carries making charges of roughly 8β25% plus GST, both paid at purchase and neither recovered at sale. If you paid 15% in charges, the gold price has to rise 15% before you are back to level. That single fact explains most of the disappointment people feel when they compare their jewellery to the headline gold rate.
Coins, bars, gold ETFs and sovereign gold bonds avoid most of that cost. The metal performs identically whichever way you hold it; what differs is how much of the price rise you keep.

Gold pays no income
A gram of gold stays a gram of gold. There is no interest, dividend or rent, so the whole return depends on the price being higher when you sell. That is why gold is usually treated as a diversifier rather than a core holding.
Gold β common questions
Do you show live gold prices?
No. You enter the price per gram yourself. We do not connect to a live gold price feed, so nothing on this site should be treated as a market quote.
Why does jewellery return less than the gold price suggests?
Making charges and GST are paid upfront but are not recovered when you sell. The Gold Profit/Loss Calculator makes this visible.
