Compounding frequency, and why it matters less than you think
Most Indian bank deposits compound quarterly. Compounding more often does help, but modestly: βΉ1,00,000 at 8% for five years gives βΉ1,46,933 compounded yearly and βΉ1,48,985 compounded monthly. The length of time you stay invested matters far more than the frequency, which is why the tenure field moves the result so much more than the compounding dropdown does.
The tax point most people miss
Interest from deposits is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate β not at a special lower rate, and not only when the deposit matures. At 7% interest in the 30% bracket you effectively earn about 4.9% before inflation. The FD and RD calculators both accept your tax rate so you can see that figure rather than the headline one.
What deposits are good at
Certainty. You know the rate on the day you open the account, which makes deposits well suited to emergency funds, short-term goals and money you will need on a known date. Beating inflation over decades is not what they are for β compare the real return using the Inflation-Adjusted Return Calculator.
