Why this site holds no tax rates
Indian capital gains rates, holding-period thresholds, exemptions and indexation rules have changed more than once in recent years. A rate written into a calculator would look authoritative and quietly become wrong, which is worse than asking you to check. So these calculators take the rate from you and do the arithmetic β please verify the current figure for your asset and holding period before relying on a result.
Real returns, not headline returns
Every advertised return is a nominal one. To know whether you can buy more than before, take off tax first β you are taxed on the whole nominal gain β and then remove inflation. A 7% deposit in the 30% bracket returns about 4.9% after tax, which against 6% inflation is a real return of roughly β1%. The balance rises while the buying power falls.
One piece of arithmetic worth remembering: the real return is not the return minus inflation. At 12% against 6% the correct answer is 5.66%, not 6%, because inflation erodes the returns as well as the original amount.
Tax & Inflation β common questions
Are the tax rates up to date?
You enter the rate yourself, so the tool never goes stale. Check the current rate for your asset and holding period before relying on the number.
What is a real return?
Your return after inflation. If you earn 8% while inflation is 6%, your real return is roughly 1.9% β barely ahead.
