How to use this calculator
- Enter amount invested — A single (lump sum) investment. For monthly SIPs use the SIP calculator.
- Enter nav when you invested — From your account statement.
- Enter nav today
- Enter years held — Used for the annualised return. 0.5 means six months.
- Read the result — it updates as you type.
The formula used
Units = Amount ÷ Purchase NAV · Value = Units × Current NAV
- NAV
- Net Asset Value — the price of one unit of the fund
- Units
- How many units your money bought
Absolute return = (value − amount) ÷ amount × 100. The annualised figure uses the CAGR formula so a three-year and a seven-year fund can be compared fairly.
Worked example
You invested ₹1,00,000 when the NAV was ₹45. Today the NAV is ₹82, five years later.
- Units1,00,000 ÷ 45 = 2,222.22 units
- Current value2,222.22 × 82 = ₹1,82,222
- Gain = ₹1,82,222 − ₹1,00,000 = ₹82,222
- Absolute return = 82.22%
- CAGR = (1,82,222 ÷ 1,00,000)1/5 − 1 = 12.75% a year
The fund grew 82% in total, which is 12.75% a year — the figure to compare against other funds and against inflation.
Reading your mutual fund statement
NAV is simply the price of one unit. When you invest, your money buys units at that day's NAV; the number of units almost never changes afterwards, but their price does. That is why "value" and "units" are two separate lines on your statement.
A high NAV is not expensive
A fund with a NAV of ₹500 is not more expensive than one at ₹50 — you simply get fewer, larger units. What matters is the percentage the NAV moves, not its level.
Direct vs regular plans
The direct plan of the same fund has a higher NAV growth because it carries no distributor commission. Over long periods that difference compounds into a meaningful amount — check which plan your statement shows.
For SIPs, this is the wrong tool
A SIP buys units at dozens of different NAVs, so there is no single purchase NAV. Use the SIP Calculator for projections, and your fund house's XIRR figure for actual past returns.
Tips and common mistakes
Getting more out of it
- Take the NAV figures straight from your account statement rather than a fund website, so they match your actual purchase date.
- Check whether you hold the direct or regular plan — the same fund returns noticeably more in the direct plan over long periods.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using this for a SIP. Every instalment bought at a different NAV, so there is no single purchase price.
- Believing a fund with a NAV of ₹500 is expensive compared with one at ₹50. Only the percentage change matters.
- Forgetting exit load if you are redeeming early, which is deducted from what you receive.
Frequently asked questions
What is NAV?
Net Asset Value — the per-unit price of a mutual fund, calculated at the end of each business day from the value of everything the fund holds.
Can I use this for a SIP?
Not accurately, because each instalment buys at a different NAV. Use it for lump sum investments, and check your statement's XIRR for SIP returns.
Does this include exit load and expense ratio?
The expense ratio is already reflected in the NAV, so it is accounted for. Exit load, charged if you redeem early, is not — subtract it from the current value if it applies.
Why is my annualised return lower than the absolute return?
Because the absolute return covers several years. Spreading it evenly across those years always produces a smaller yearly figure. Only for exactly one year are the two identical.
